Charity benefit from Triathlon

Filed under: Member — admin @ 3:19 pm

Mincoff Jacksons raised £2750 for the charitable fund of the Haematology Department at County Durham and Darlington Acute Hospitals NHS Trust by taking party in the Helly Hansen adventure triathlon held in the Lake District in March 2009.  Employees of the local law firm visited the hospital in Durham on Wednesday 6th May to make their donation.

The event was part of the Helly Hansen Challenge Series where competitors operate in teams of three to complete a gruelling course, which involved 10 km of off-road running, 25 km of mountain biking and 1.5 km of kayaking. (more…)

HMRC – Budget Payment Plan

Filed under: Business — admin @ 3:16 pm

There are more than six months to go before the deadline for filing your tax assessment online so now could be a good time to set some money aside to pay that tax bill. To help, HR Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has set up a flexible Budget Payment Plan which means that you could set up regular payments by direct debit right now.
The Budget Payment Plan is available to all customers who want to sign up and whose payments are up to date. The scheme takes away the stress involved with finding a large sum of money by 31 January 2010. Users decide their own weekly or monthly payment amount. The scheme is so flexible that people are free to take a break at any time and suspend payment for a period of up to six months, or just cancel completely.
Working online with HMRC means you can work much faster, at your own convenience, while at all times knowing that you are working in a secure environment.
Direct debit is a well proven method of making payments and it takes only one or two minutes to set up a Direct Debit Instruction and payment plan.
As well as the Budget Payment Plan, a self assessment customer can set up a single payment. If you have a payment on account to make on 31 July you can set that up now for collection on or before 31 July. The Direct Debit Instruction you set up can also be used to pay another eight types of taxes and duties.

Redundancy is it the end or the beginning?

Filed under: Member — admin @ 3:12 pm

Initially the shock of being told I was being made redundant on my first day back at work after Christmas was enough to make me sick with fear. Despite the economic downturn and the resulting expectation that Pentland Ltd, my employer, would struggle to achieve an increased turnover in 2009, I was not aware that they were considering any redundancies, least of all mine! Having enjoyed the Christmas holidays I walked back into Pentland’s London office on the 5th of January, and almost immediately found myself on the train heading north again feeling terrified for my family’s future.

One week later and the reality of the situation took a different turn, rather than fear, I felt strangely elated to be free, excited by the fact that I could take back control of the situation and do something I’d never done before – rely on myself for my salary and not an employer.

Many of you reading this will recognise the situation and the emotional turmoil that results but most of you I hope will also be saying as I am now  (more…)

Pride of South Tyneside Awards

Filed under: Member — admin @ 3:10 pm

Since the inception of the Pride of South Tyneside Awards the people at Solar Solve Marine, the solar roller screen manufacturer based within the Port of Tyne, have been very impressed and absolutely amazed at the wealth of talent and selfless commitment that exists within our community.

We are very proud and honoured to have been involved from the start and especially delighted this year to have sponsored the Achieving Excellence award, which is something we always aim for.

The very worthy winner was Stevie Jay Fellows, 14, of South Shields, who was surprised and emotional as she was presented with the award by BBC Radio Newcastle’s Gilly Hope. (more…)

June Newsletter

Filed under: Network — admin @ 12:15 pm

Dear Member

Well what a fantastic meeting we had at the Quality Hotel last month. Attendance was in excess of 120 and although it was a joint event with Sunderland Business Network, attendees from South Tyneside accounted for just over half of those present – a record attendance from STBN members and one we hope to see repeated at forthcoming meetings.

Feedback from the event has been very positive and culminated in 4 guests joining the Network by the end of the evening. I am encouraged by the large number of guests that did attend and am sure that more and more businesses will turn to the Network as it is clearly a cost effective way of marketing your businesses to others in the area. I should also point out that with the new members the Network’s membership now stands at 102 – the 3rd largest network in the Business Clubs North East Limited. It would be great to think that this time next year we could be the 2nd with a little help from our current members as you spread the word as to how effective the network is. Unfortunately we have some way to go to reach Durham Business Club who are at the top of the pile with around 300 members – but then they have been in existence for over 25 years!!!!!

As I pointed out in last month’s newsletter, membership renewals have begun to be sent out and I trust that those of you who have received them will act upon them immediately, so as to avoid being removed from the database and web directories. The committee and I would also appreciate prompt payment in order to ensure the finances of the Network are secure over the forthcoming months.

The annual South Tyneside Business Week is taking place from 29th June till 6th July. I am pleased to let you know that the Network is staging an event within Business Week for the first time.

It is entitled “I hate Networking! But it works”. This is being targeted at those businesses that never get involved in networking, so if you know of a business colleague who you think would welcome the opportunity to come along to such an event to ”test the water” as it were please let him or her know of the event which takes place on Wednesday the 1st July at The Quadrus, Boldon between 12.30 and 2.00. A light buffet will be served.

Full details will be appearing on our website within the next couple of days.

My final item this month is to remind you that with your username and password you can place news items and information on the site that will promote and raise the profile of you business. If you have lost either of these pieces of information please email info@stbn.co.uk with a replacement request. The more items on the site the more coverage it will get so please take sometime to visit the site – update your information and add some news.

The summer edition of ‘Your Business’ will be with you in the next week or so – thank you to all who have contributed and I look forward to seeing you either tomorrow at our June meeting or in the near future.

Regards
